We are looking for nominations for our LMSC’s top award, the Gruender Award. This award is named after our founders, Edie and Dan Gruender, who started Masters Swimming in Arizona in the late 1970’s!
The Gruender Award is awarded to the one person or group of people who have contributed the most to adult swimming in Arizona within the last year. This could be in the way of coaching, volunteering, swimming or instructing; any manner of “giving back” to the LMSC.
Send your nominations to Chair Katy James. Please include the name of the person nominated, why they deserve this award, and a contact person who is nominating them.
This March USMS is going to host the first in-person meeting of volunteers, the 2022 USMS Volunteer Relay. The inaugural Relay will be an opportunity to share ideas about how best to create more opportunities for adults to swim in USMS clubs.
AZLMSC will be sending Dorothy Brelih, Terry DeBiase, Kathy Gallagher, and Terry Heggy.
The event runs from March 4th to 6th in Denver, Colorado. The schedule of events is available. If there is a session that interests you, that you have questions on, or that you would like to get more information on after the event, please let Kathy know, and she will coordinate with the attendees.
We regret to inform you that Tucson Ford Aquatics Masters will not be hosting the annual Polar Bear Classic meet in 2022. Logistical issues along with the recent surge in COVID cases due to the Omicron variant have led us to this decision. We appreciate your support in years past and look forward to hosting again in 2023.
We congratulate Lindsey Urbatchka, Terry DeBiase, Susan Foster and Dorothy Brelih as our newly elected At-Large Board members!
Their 2 year terms begin January 1, 2022. Thanks to all of our candidates and to our Elections guru, Jeff Commings, for running such a clean election!
Congratulations to the new Arizona LMSC Executive Board.
Chair: Katy James
Vice Chair: Liz Hobbs
Secretary: Kathy Gallagher
Treasurer: Marianne Rexer
Thank you to the previous Executive Board members for their service.
Lindsey Urbatchka receives 2019 Award for Service to AZ LMSC
From her nomination application: “Lindsey has proven herself a very valuable member of the AZLMSC in the many years she has been associated with with us…She offered her services as the Immediate Past Chair of the AZLMSC Board of Directors. The past president…had moved to Canada, leaving his very important position on the Board open. Without hesitation, Lindsey stepped up the fill the big fins of …Past Chair. Lindsey took on this role after spending many years as the Board Secretary. Lindsey has been a leading force of our success as a Board… Lindsey is so knowledgable on all the AZLMSC Policies and Procedures… She stepped up to host our AZLMSC Annual Meeting at her house when we were unable to find a workable restaurant…Lindsey is always volunteering for special committees. This is incredible considering she is in the midst of starting her own business and being a mom to her toddler son!
“According to Lindsey’s husband, Jonah, ‘Lindsey has been swimming Masters for 14 years. After her success at the University of Kansas Swimming Team, she found a home at Mesa Aquatics. She has set several national records and is constantly striving for Top Five in her age group. Lindsey is passionate about cheering on her teammates/friends…Through her drive and commitment, she has overcome a broken foot, back surgery, a double mastectomy and the birth of her son, Kyler. As she battled back from each one of those bumps in the road it was her getting back to swimming quickly that motivated her to keep at it.’
“She is such a positive force for all of us in Arizona Masters. She brings a sense of lightheartedness to all situations. She makes swimming for Arizona something to be proud of. She always brightens my day with her positive, can-do attitude. I figure if Lindsey can find the time to volunteer to our great organization, we all can!”
